Brennan popular … with UGA defensive tackle

December 30, 2007 · 1 Comment

From the Savannah Morning News:

NEW ORLEANS – A TV reporter asked Colt Brennan for his signature as the quarterback sat down to answer questions from the media here Saturday. Brennan also obliged when a stranger wanted to pose with him in front of camcorder this week on Bourbon Street.

The guy’s name was Geno Atkins. Yes, the Georgia defensive tackle who will try to put Brennan on his backside Tuesday in the Sugar Bowl stopped to meet Brennan when both were with some of their teammates one night this week.

“He was like acting like a groupie,” said defensive end Marcus Howard: “All of us gave him grief for that.”

“Geno wanted to just meet him,” defensive tackle Jeff Owens said. “He was taking pictures of everything we saw. He got Colt Brennan.”

Linebacker Dannell Ellerbe wasn’t thrilled when he heard the news.

“I’m going to have to get him about that,” Ellerbe said. “You don’t take pictures with the enemy.”

I’m here in New Orleans, and one thing that hits you right away:  the number one shirt here is a Colt Brennan jersey.  The area around the airport, and downtown New Orleans is filled with Hawaii fans wearing black, green and white.

Whatever happens with the outcome of January 1’s game, Hawaii fans should be proud of themselves that they’ve traveled so far, in such good numbers.

Corso: Take Brennan First

December 30, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Interview in the NY Post:

Q: Can Hawaii [in the Sugar Bowl versus Georgia] pull off an upset like Boise State did last year?

A: Absolutely. It’s a tough assignment playing Georgia down in the South, tougher than what Boise State had last year against Oklahoma. It’s a tough environment in New Orleans, inside a dome with a million Georgia fans, and Georgia is playing as well as anyone in the country, winning six straight games. But I still think Hawaii is going to do it somehow. They are going to throw the ball around and outscore them. You take Colt Brennan’s arm, with the legs and hands of the receivers, who are among the best in the country, and coach June Jones’ mind, and I just think they will put a ton of points on the board and outscore Georgia. They are just so good at that passing game. It is a great equalizer.

Q: If you were an NFL GM, which quarterback would you want to take first in the NFL draft: Kentucky’s Andre Woodson, Louisville’s Brian Brohm, Brennan, or Boston College’s Matt Ryan?

A: I would take Brennan ’cause he has played more of a pro attack. He can throw the football well, and June Jones is a pro coach. I like the fact that he has been taught the passing game from the ground up from Jones.

Mark Richt on Brennan

December 30, 2007 · Leave a Comment

From the Knoxville News-Sentinel, and run by the Advertiser:

Colt Brennan, championship quarterback.

That’s how Georgia coach Mark Richt described Hawai’i’s star quarterback when discussing the Warriors Jan. 1 Sugar Bowl date with the Bulldogs in New Orleans.

Richt, 48, is certainly qualified to judge.

Richt was a college quarterback himself at the University of Miami (Fla.) before embarking on a coaching career that’s seen him tutor top-flight signal-callers as the Bulldogs’ head coach, including David Greene, who ranks as the winningest quarterback in Southeastern Conference history.

Before that, Richt coached Heisman Trophy winners Charlie Ward and Chris Weinke as Florida State’s offensive coordinator (1994-2000) and quarterbacks coach (1990-2000).

“If he (Brennan) was inserted into certain (SEC) teams that might have struggled at the position, he would have won them a championship,” Richt said. “The guy is a great quarterback.’

NY Times on Colt

December 29, 2007 · Leave a Comment

The NY Times has a nice feature on Colt and his last college game.  Some clips:

And more important, Brennan enjoyed himself. He attained celebrity status on the island. For a recent autograph session sponsored by the university, fans camped out overnight. Brennan would walk into class and see students waiting with bags of memorabilia for him to sign. Even his teammates often asked for autographs for friends and relatives.

He was so preoccupied that his former high school teammate Matt Leinart had a hard time contacting him. Brennan remembered that Leinart had also been difficult to reach during his rise to fame at Southern California.

But through the undefeated season, the injuries and a trip to New York as a Heisman Trophy finalist, one thing remained constant for Brennan.

Hawaii linebacker Solomon Elimimian said: “I feel like the most joy on his face was just being with the guys. The greatest joy he had was being with us as a team.” [...]

Gil Brandt, a draft analyst, said Brennan was still projected as a second-round pick. Brandt easily rattles off what he considers Brennan’s deficiencies: his slender 6-foot-3 frame, his sidearm throwing motion, his inflated numbers from playing in a pass-happy run-and-shoot offense. But he likes Brennan for a simple reason.

“All he’s done is won football games,” Brandt said.

The coaches who have seen a lot of Brennan are baffled by all the questions.

AJC: Tebow gives Hawaii QB advice on Georgia

December 29, 2007 · Leave a Comment

From their 29th edition:

Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan said he and Florida quarterback Tim Tebow compared notes on Georgia when the two were at the Heisman Trophy ceremonies in New York City earlier this month.

“He said [Georgia's was] the best defense he played and they gave him the most trouble,” Brennan said.

Tebow was sacked six times by the Bulldogs in a 42-30 loss in Jacksonville. Tebow’s advice?

“He said just get rid of it because they’re coming,” Brennan said. “They’re a very physical and very fast defense. They’re Georgia. They live up to their reputation and they’re just as good as they are any year.”

Colt first round material?

December 26, 2007 · Leave a Comment

So writes Randy Covitz in the Kansas City Star, who briefly mentions Colt in an article about the QB position for the Kansas City Chiefs:

The Chiefs, 4-11, can be staring at a top-five draft pick, but Edwards sees too many other needs on the team to spend it on a quarterback. Three quarterbacks — Louisville’s Brian Brohm, Boston College’s Matt Ryan and Hawaii’s Colt Brennan — are considered first-round material.

“Let’s say you draft a quarterback in the first round,” Edwards said. “I don’t see a franchise quarterback out there. I haven’t evaluated them, but I haven’t heard enough that, ‘This is Peyton Manning.’ What does that tell you? What have you got? You might have the same guy you already have.

“There are a lot of positions on this team we have to fill …”

As previously noted, Scout.com has Colt as the 19th best draft prospect.

Colt Brennan: College Graduate

December 17, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Honolulu Star-Bulletin.

Honolulu Advertiser:

There have been hundreds of college graduation ceremonies across the nation this past week.

But only the University of Hawai’i’s fall ceremony featured a 2007 Heisman Trophy finalist, a commencement speaker wearing a replica of the star quarterback’s jersey, and a rousing 27-second ovation for the last College of Arts and Sciences graduate announced.

Then again, UH quarterback Colt Brennan is not an ordinary student, ensuring that yesterday’s commencement ceremony in the Stan Sheriff Center would not be an ordinary event.

Brennan on ESPN’s non-BCS conferences team

December 13, 2007 · Leave a Comment

ESPN:

Western Athletic Conference

Most Valuable Player

QB Colt Brennan, Hawaii
The big numbers were guaranteed, but how far could Brennan take Hawaii in 2007? All the way to Bourbon Street, it turned out. Brennan not only continued to redraft the NCAA record books, but he led Hawaii to a perfect season and a BCS berth in the Sugar Bowl. The so-called system quarterback didn’t match his ridiculous stats from 2006 (5,549 passing yards, NCAA record 58 touchdowns), but he still managed 4,174 yards and 38 touchdowns. Brennan owns or shares 29 NCAA records, including career touchdown passes (131).

Coach of the Year

June Jones, Hawaii
The man behind Hawaii’s insane offense proved he could take a team to the top. Jones helped Brennan develop into one of the nation’s best players, and his offense led the nation in scoring (46.2 ppg). Hawaii fixed a shaky defense and survived two overtime tests to finish as the nation’s only undefeated team. Jones earned his second consecutive WAC Coach of the Year award and could be heading to a bigger job on the mainland.

Fox Sports — Loose ends: Brennan wins on coolness

December 11, 2007 · 1 Comment

Fox Sports feature on Brennan at the Heisman ceremony.

I spoke with Hawaii’s Colt Brennan for awhile at Saturday night’s Heisman ceremony. He had the line of the night. When I asked him whether he thought playing in Hawaii hurt his chances for the Heisman, he responded with a laugh: “I don’t know. I have no regrets. I went to the University of Hawaii for three years. The way I see it — the joke’s on everyone else.”

You know what? He’s right. [...]
The scouts and NFL writers are going to pick apart his throwing style come February. That’s almost as definite as taxes, death, and another Lindsay Lohan meltdown. But that shouldn’t deter teams from going with the guy. Most draft pundits I’ve spoken to have Brennan listed as a late second-, early third-round draft pick.

Personally, with the absolute dearth of quality QB’s in the league — as made evident in an NFL week where Brock Berlin, Chris Redman, and two McCown brothers started games — I can’t see him slipping out of the first round. Brennan has a fantastic touch and one of the quicker releases you’ll see.

Colt Brennan slowed down enough to express gratitude for being named to The Associated Press All-America third team.

This is final exam week. UH resumes practicing Thursday.
Of being named to the A-A third team, Brennan said: “Obviously, it’s a great honor. I’m really excited. Anytime you get recognition it’s nice.”
Davone Bess also was named to the third team.
“I’m thankful,” Bess said. “I give praise to my coaches and teammates. I’m going to try to work my way to second or first team next year.”

The highest finish since …

December 9, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Here’s an interesting tidbit from the Honolulu Advertiser about the Heisman:

Brennan received 54 No. 1 votes and 632 points. He had the highest finish for a player from a non-major conference since Alcorn State quarterback Steve McNair placed third in 1994. UH competes in the Western Athletic Conference, which is not among the six Bowl Championship Series conferences.

McNair, of course, has had a hugely successive career in the NFL for over a decade. Not bad company.

Colt finishes 3rd in Heisman

December 8, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Colt finished 3rd in the Heisman balloting.

Considering that: 1) Colt was injured for nearly 2 games; 2) Colt often plays when the rest of the country is sleeping; 3) Colt plays in the WAC, the 3rd place finish is certainly respectable, if not a great achievement.

At the same time, the two finalists who received votes ahead of Colt — Tebow and McFadden — have a combined total of 7 losses. Hawaii, of course, has 0.

At the Heisman ceremony, Colt was all class, saying good things about Tebow:

Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan finished third, the highest finish in 13 years by a player outside the six conferences with automatic BCS bids, and Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel finished fourth.

“I was reading all that Tebow accomplished,” Brennan said, “He had an unbelievable season. I really think he deserved it.”

Ivan Maisel of ESPN wonders about that ’system’ label at least two of the QBs in contention for the Heisman carry …

This blog’s position on the system label has always been: so what?

As stated numerous times in the past, Hawaii’s offense makes average QBs, good QBs. Good QBs, great QBs. And great QBs into … well, they’re already great. Can you fault a guy like Colt for being a great QB and doing great in that system?

Brennan for Heisman?

December 7, 2007 · 1 Comment

Matt Hayes in the Sporting News:

1. QB Colt Brennan, Sr., Hawaii. His numbers are impressive (more than 4,100 yards passing, 38 TD; 8 rush TD), and breaking an NCAA record every time he steps on the field helps, too.

But here’s what matters: Four times this season Brennan led his team to come-from-behind wins in the fourth quarter. The last was against Washington — with everything on the line — when Brennan completed a staggering 42-of-50 passes and threw five touchdown passes that accounted for all of Hawaii’s points.

If you don’t think there was pressure in that Washington game, ask LSU if there was pressure in the Arkansas game with everything on the line. Or West Virginia with Pitt coming to town. Or Missouri against Oklahoma.

Hawaii was down 21-0 in the first quarter, and Brennan kept chipping away.

Just like when the Warriors were down 14 points with four minutes to play at San Jose State — and Brennan was playing with a high ankle sprain.

I don’t care that Hawaii’s schedule was one of the weakest in the nation — it’s all relative, people. Florida’s schedule is tough, but Florida has significantly better players than Hawaii and should be able to compete with anyone in the nation.

Hawaii’s recruiting budget is $65,000; Florida’s is $600,000. The Gators likely spent $65K alone recruiting Tebow.

Why penalize a player because he doesn’t play in a BCS league?

in the Albany Herald:

Brennan, meanwhile, has kept the Warriors undefeated all season, even leading two fourth-quarter comebacks to preserve perfection. He’s thrown for 4,174 yards and 38 TDs, and also ran for eight more — nearly identical to frontrunner Tebow’s mark when you weigh the stats collectively.

Additionally, he led the Warriors to their first WAC title in history, as well as their first BCS bowl.

Tebow, McFadden and Daniels all fell short in their respective conferences.

Of course, what conference did BYU and Detmer play in again? The Mountain West — a division that’s resembles the WAC in terms of the public perception of its strength.

And that brings me to my final point.

As for Hawaii playing the quote-unquote “softest schedule in college football,” my response is this: I don’t see a lot of the teams considered college football powerhouses going out of their way to play against the WAC, I guess because of sheer traveling distance, time differential and cost to the schools — or maybe they’re simply afraid of being embarrassed.

So, because Hawaii can’t get the Floridas, Ohio States and USCs to spend the dough, suck up some jet lag and make the trek to Honolulu, the Warriors and Brennan — when it comes to BCS bowl and Heisman selection — should be penalized?

That hardly seems right.

Christine Brennan of USA Today goes for Colt Brennan:

How could this C. Brennan not vote for that C. Brennan?

It’s not like I was giving my vote to any old famous Brennan, such as the late actor Walter or the actress Eileen or the late Supreme Court Justice William. I wasn’t tossing my support to former Cleveland Browns wide receiver Brian, who actually played at Boston College with Doug Flutie, who has a Heisman of his own.

No, this was a legit first-place vote for one of the four players who has been invited to New York for Saturday night’s Heisman announcement. This was a real vote for a once-troubled player who seemingly has gotten his act together at the University of Hawaii to become the most dominant throwing quarterback the NCAA has ever seen, including a stellar junior year, in 2006, when he threw for a record 58 touchdowns. He also holds the NCAA record for most touchdown passes in a career, with 131.

BJ Lisko of the Salem News goes for Brennan:

He deserves it. His stats back it up, his performance in the clutch backs it up, and his performance in the Sugar Bowl against Georgia will back it up.

Brennan did what no other Heisman candidate did. He simply won every contest he was asked to win. He led his team from behind. He demolished the squads he was supposed to demolish. He set the bar for pass-oriented college quarterbacks.

No other candidate has accomplished what Brennan did. Florida quarterback Tim Tebow failed in the clutch numerous times, and Florida is headed to a second-tier postseason game against Michigan in the Capitol One Bowl. The Gators lost three contests.

Colt officially going to the Heisman

December 5, 2007 · 1 Comment

AP/ESPN.

Writer Bruce Feldman makes the case for and against Colt going:

Colt Brennan, QB, Hawaii, senior

Once again, Brennan has put up eye-popping passing stats, completing 71 percent of his passes for 4,174 yards for the nation’s top-ranked scoring offense (46 ppg). The 6-foot-3 senior is also second in total offense (to Texas Tech’s Graham Harrell) and third in passing efficiency. Brennan’s numbers actually are down a bit from last season, but his team is unbeaten and no other QB can make that claim.Heisman moment: Brennan was on fire against Washington on national television last Saturday, completing 42 of 50 passes as he led UH back from a 21-point deficit, capped by his game-winning 5-yard slant pass to Ryan Grice-Mullen with 44 seconds left.

Why he will win the Heisman: In a year where everyone lost, Hawaii didn’t, and without Brennan being nearly perfect last week, the Warriors surely would’ve stumbled, too.

Why he won’t win the Heisman: Hawaii’s schedule was incredibly soft. The team probably didn’t play a top 75 caliber opponent until November. And, as great as Brennan’s stats are, Texas Tech’s Graham Harrell’s are even better this season — and his team did beat Oklahoma.

Brennan Third in ESPN’s Heisman Watch

December 4, 2007 · Leave a Comment

ESPN.com has Colt solidly in third for the Heisman race. Unsurprisingly, Tim Tebow is in 1st. However, the race for the Heisman is very close.

We should know whether Colt is invited to New York on Wednesday.

As has been noted here before, and by others, given the vast majority of Colt’s games are played after east coast writers go to bed, and the relative anonymity of Hawaii sports, it would be a huge honor in and of itself if Colt just got invited to New York. Simply winning the Heisman, of course, would be momentous.

Tidbits

December 3, 2007 · Leave a Comment

The AP has an early preview of the Sugar Bowl matchup.

Colt was named the MVP of the team at an award ceremony last night.

NY Times has its Heisman watch and writes this about Brennan:  “Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan: An invitation to New York for the Heisman ceremony will be the equivalent of winning the award.”  ESPN, meanwhile, has Colt at 5th.

The NY Times also writes on Colt and his 4 receivers being named Offensive Unit of the Year:

So in an unprecedented move, the W.A.C. is naming Hawaii’s offense the “Offensive Unit of the Year” in recognition of a group that racked up 6,351 yards this season and leads the country in scoring with 46.2 points per game. Brennan’s receivers — Jason Rivers, Davone Bess, Ryan Grice-Mullen and C.J. Hawthorne — distinguished themselves as one of the country’s top units.

Here’s the skinny from Benson: “Colt asked me in the locker room after the Washington game on Saturday night that if he was selected the player of the year, was there a way the W.A.C. could share the award with his boys. Once again, Colt impressed me with his unselfishness, and I told him I would do what I could. On the flight back to the mainland, I thought of this way to pay tribute to Colt and these four great receivers for the season each had and how they each contributed to the Warriors’ perfect 12-0 regular season.”

Attention Heisman voters: Send Colt to New York

December 2, 2007 · 6 Comments

This week, Heisman voters will decide whether Colt deserves an invitation to New York.

Here are some things Heisman voters should consider when filling out their ballots:

PROVEN WINNER. Colt Brennan and the Hawaii Warriors are 23-3 in the past two years (21-3, if you consider that Colt didn’t play in one game, and played only a few snaps in another). Even if you cry, ‘easy schedule,’ consider Colt’s games against the so-called BCS conference teams:

Washington: 42/50, 84%, 442 yards, 5 TD, 0 INTs.
Arizona State: 33/42, 79%, 559 yards, 5 TDs, 1 INT.
Oregon State: 37/50, 74%, 401 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs.
Purdue: 33/48, 69%, 434 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT.
Alabama: 33/44, 68%, 350 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT.

When you add it all up, Colt has thrown for 17 TDs against only 5 picks. He’s averaged 437 yards per game, and completed 76% of his passes.

HE GAVE UP MILLIONS FOR THIS? ESPN the Magazine wrote in a September cover story: “He gave up NFL millions for this? A twin foam mattress without sheets on a bare tile floor? It looks like a dog’s bed, except no dog lives in this cozy plank house. Instead, Colt Brennan, college football’s most complete quarterback, lounges here, waiting out the early August heat in Kahuku, a two-stoplight town in rural Hawaii.”

Back in January, Colt made grown men cry, telling the state of Hawaii in a live press conference that he wanted to forgo NFL millions for the chance to return to Hawaii for his final season of eligibility so he could do exactly what he did: win every game of the season, and go to the BCS.

In an era where athletes are criticized for huge salaries and ego, how can you not like a guy who says about why he decided to come back to his new-home: “I like the person I’m becoming here.”

MR. ‘SECOND CHANCE.’ By now, everyone knows the circuitous route Colt took to get to Hawaii: he got kicked off the Colorado football team after a conviction for trespassing, was ostracized from several possible playing opportunities after, and went to an island in the middle of the Pacific to seek redemption. You can read more about that story here.

Colt has embraced his role in Hawaii as a role model, and doesn’t forget how a mistake one night led to jail time and years of agony. He’s active in the community, never turning down a chance to talk to kids and those who lead troubled lives. Notes ESPN.com:

Brennan lives near Hale Ho’omalu, the main juvenile detention center in Honolulu. Several Sundays ago, the quarterback was walking by the center to get his morning coffee when one of the employees stopped him. They began chatting. After several minutes, Brennan asked if he could talk to the detainees.

He spoke for an hour, sharing his story, instructing the kids to maintain strong relationships with their probation officers.

“They’re talking to a convicted felon who also is a kid that’s kind of idolized around the island right now,” Brennan said. “For them, being in that juvie center, it gave them a lot of hope. They were sitting there thinking, ‘God, my life is not ruined. I can make my life a lot better.’ “

OH YEAH, AND THE STATS. As Lee Corso noted, Colt Brennan has broken nearly every single record for a QB.

A small sampling of the records under his name:

NCAA record for most career touchdown passes
NCAA record for most career touchdowns responsible for
NCAA single-season record for most touchdown passes
NCAA two-season record for most touchdown passes
NCAA record for passing efficiency (season)
NCAA record for most passing yards (two seasons)
NCAA record for most points responsible for (season)
Tied-NCAA record for most career touchdown passes by a quarterback-receiver combination (with Davone Bess)

When it comes to Colt Brennan and the Heisman, the question may not be why you should vote for Colt, but rather: why wouldn’t you vote Colt for the Heisman?

Hawaii comes back to beat UW

December 1, 2007 · Leave a Comment

“If you were thinking about putting Brennan 1, 2 or 3 on your Heisman ballot, this is what you needed to see.”  ESPN

Barring unforeseen surprises, Hawaii will play in the BCS.

Hawaii’s defense, after a shaky first half, held strong against the Huskies in the second.

In a season marked by losses and upsets, Hawaii did something no other team in Division 1A football can claim:  go undefeated.

Colt Brennan, meanwhile, put together arguably his best game ever as a Hawaii player — completing an unreal 84% (42-50), 442 yards, and 5 TDs.  He did not throw a single pick.  Whether or not you believe Colt deserves to win the Heisman, how can he not get an invite to New York with a 84% completion performance in guiding his team to a 12-0 finish?  We’ll see how the Heisman voters answer.

As anyone in the state of Hawaii will tell you, no other sports season has ever captivated the state like this season has.  And tonight, Hawaii wrote the second to last chapter in its Cinderella storybook.  The date of its last chapter will be announced tomorrow.
