Sugar Bowl: UGA beats Hawaii

January 1, 2008 · 28 Comments

Bigger, faster, stronger, better: the Bulldogs of UGA defeated Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl.

Colt’s final line for the night: 22-of-38 for 169 yards, intercepted three times and lost two fumbles. Brennan was sacked 8 times, and hurried at least twice as much.

This fan blog doesn’t need to sugarcoat it: the game was certainly the worst game during his career at the University of Hawaii.

Yet no one can take away the magic of Hawaii’s incredible regular season. And no one can deny the reciprocal love between Brennan and the state of Hawaii. Indeed, despite the drumming by UGA, at the conclusion of the Sugar Bowl, Hawaii’s large number of fans — and, considering the distance traveled, large they were — gave the team a standing ovation.

Numerous articles, both national and local, have noted how much Brennan and the Warriors have meant to the isolated state in the middle of the Pacific. The Star-Bulletin noted that “The impact of UH’s greatest football player ever transcended sports. He is a one-man chamber of commerce and has become the state’s most visible figure.”

Sports figures are mere mortals who excite and inspire. Since his January press conference announcing his senior season return, Colt inspired the state to think of the unthinkable: BCS glory. And while they ultimately came up short, Colt, and all of the Warriors, deserve thanks, praise, and applause for what they’ve done for Hawaii.

PS site note: With Colt’s Hawaii career officially over, this blog will begin to monitor news and analysis about Colt’s draft projections, etc.

Colt did a good job, yeah he got sacked but…. he got pretty bust up out there too he still should be proud of himself, Graunke and his team!!!! Let’s see what is in store for him now!!!!!!

Finally…all of Hawaii can see that the Warriors are not #1…not even close. They were way out of their league and they finally got to see what real college football is about.

    Colt,

I watched the game yesterday and want to tell you how much I admire your strength and spirit! Of course Georgia’s strategy was to ‘get Colt Brennan’ and after awhile I wondered how you could keep getting up to do your job. You did as best you could, isn’t that we all strive for?

I will always admire your perserverence and thank you and the team for such a glorious season! Good luck in your future endeavors! Gambatte ne!

    Aloha, Eileen

Welcome to football southern style. Georgia overwhelmed Hawaii and Colt with speed, strength, and talent. The SEC is the best in the land and still doesn’t get enough credit. I bet Colt is glad he is not an SEC QB. Its kinda funny that Georgia didnt even win the division….

Welcome to the “Real World” Colt! What would really be nice is if June Jones could be man enough to apologize to Tim Tebo for accusing him of being a “System Quarterback”. Colt needed to play a real team to understand what Tebo and any of the SEC quarterbacks go through every week. I wonder if June (That’s a Chicks Name) still believes that Colt is a worthy candidate for the Heisman?

Dude, the refs weren’t from the SEC. That’s not allowed in bowl games. You might want to read up on that.

Good luck with the grammar/spelling lessons.

Give us a break will ya? It was Hawaii’s first time. Rivals or not, we’ll still welcome you to Hawaii with ALOHA. =)

The Hawaii team has good sportmanship. Its evident that they lost from the very beginning, but they still fought until the end like a real warrior.

  • BdubbaU // January 3, 2008 at 12:16 pm | Reply

The Warriors have absolutely nothing to hang their heads about. They traveled very well, and their native fans were extremely nice. One more thing, most people say that Hawaii can hang with the big boys, and it was evident that in that type of venue they can’t. I think if the game is played in Hawaii Colt Brennan is still picking himself up off the turf, but the Warriors play a better game and have a different outcome. Predicition: UGA 28 – UH – 21

anyone else notice how much of a sore winner georgia was? Isn’t stomping hawaii enough? from howard dissing steinhoff to whining about not being in the championship, you could almost hear georgia saying “we’re offended to even be playing these guys”. I kinda wanted to see a fight at the end of game even though it would reflect poorly on hawaii.

p.s. to the guy who said that colt should be glad he isn’t an SEC quarterback, logically wouldn’t he have a better offensive line to work with and thus put up at least comparable numbers?

  • NoFriends // January 3, 2008 at 1:44 pm | Reply

….although if hawaii had won they would have probably been just as cocky.

  • sofa kingdom // January 3, 2008 at 1:55 pm | Reply

To all the people who say Hawaii didn’t deserve to be in the Sugar Bowl consider this: UH plays in the WAC, UGA plays in the SEC. UH went undefeated, UGA had 2 losses. 1 loss in the WAC equals Hawaii Bowl for the Warriors. 2 losses in a BCS conference equals a very good chance at a BCS bowl game. Generally speaking any team can win their conference, which reflects a sort of parity. Anyway, Hawaii going 12-0 is just as important as Georgia going 11-2 because they’re playing to their level of competition.

  • sofa kingdom // January 3, 2008 at 2:07 pm | Reply

….it would be like if a D-II or D-III team went undefeated and their record was compared to a D-I school. saying that the D-I school plays tougher competition doesn’t mattter, it’s all relative. Also, with college as compared to the pros, it’s one and done. If the better team has a bad day and loses, there’s no moral victories, it’s still an L.

With that being said Georgia still whooped Hawaii. This doesn’t reflect so much on the competency of the BCS rankings but more on the media’s desire to see an exciting game. What’s more fair though, rewarding a team for winning or rewarding a team that is considered a better matchup? it should be about the football teams, not what will draw more ratings.

Your grammar is even worse now that I checked. Reffs? Its refs moron. You obviously don’t know what you are talking about which is apprerent when you stated “your beloved SEC reff’s” when everyone knows that they were Pac 10 refs. We also had no problem playing Hawaii and putting a hurtin’ on ‘em, so were you get SEC teams being scared is baffling. Florida is going to destroy ya’ll in the opening game next year.

Warriors are a class act! Good sportsman to the end. Very impressive team. I was NOT impressed by Brennen crying on the sidelines and his lamentations when the No. 2 QB threw the touch down. GROW UP!!! I predict that he will not make it in the NFL.

Yeah, its evident how scared the “southern boyz” were when you take in account how bad Hawaii got the shiat beat out of them. UGA looked terrified. Thats why they had their second string quarterback as well as other benchers attemempting a 4th and goal with a 31 point lead. If it makes you feel better you get the award for best hair cut and make on a man. Also, the dancing was superb.

Damn, even June Jones thought Hawaii blew…. so much that he left to go to another shitty school. Im sure it has nothing to do with the realization that Hawaii has reached its peak and its all down hill from here. Get your geography right, also. I mean, you already can’t spell and most people refer to SOUTH OF DA BORDER to South of the U.S. border. So, which border you are suggesting to is still on the table. I hope you are good at “DA GAME” so you are not totally useless. Don’ worry about the BullDogs either. If you are watching any ESPN college telivision right now you will see the top five picks for next season. Sure its a long ways away, but everyone expects Georgia in the top five and two of the three college sport center edition hosts give UGA a #1 and #2 pre season spot as well as Stafford as a Heisman Canidate. While your getting another woopin’ in the swamp by another SEC team well be working on a National Championship.

HAWAII FANS NEED TO STEP UP. Yeah, there was a lot of HI fans that showed up, and they did get really loud at times. But come on! They got loud when they felt like it. Going into 2nd half I looked at the other white sections and EVERYONE WAS SITTING DOWN. They made no noise at all. When our defense got on the field, HI was silent. When our offense went on the field, HI was loud! I don’t understand. BTW, I went to this game. I sat in sec. 113 row 20. At one point, I started yelling at our fans to try and get them to make noise for the defense. One of them told me: “yeah, we’re making noise. we make noise before hi’s offense snaps the ball.” What the hell, HI fans?! You do this at the home games, too! I’ve seen you! I don’t care how old you are either. You don’t travel 4000 miles to sit on your hands!

ok! so we lost. but no one here really cares. All we care about is that we made it there. that now everyone knows that hawaii can make it to bowl games(no one said we were gonna do good.) We still love our warriors! Hey! dont be saying june jones left cuz we sucked (yes we r sucked) in the sugar bowl! he left cuz our atheltic director was a not doing anything to help the warriors.

4 all u ppl who think colt wont go NFL cuz of his poor game at the sugar bowl. U can’t judge a guy by 1 game. yeah it may of been a really big game but it is still one game! u have to look at his other games too. focus on both the postives and negtives about colt! GOOD LUCK COLT IN NFL!
